In Cuba, baseball is part of the Cuban experience. The game traces its roots back to the early 1860’s on the island. The game was first introduced by soldiers from the United States and young Cuban men who studied in the U.S. and brought the love of the game back home. The very first officiated game took place in 1874. By 1878 the first professional baseball league in Cuba was founded. Cuba can boast some of the most legendary teams of yesteryear like the Habana Leones, Alemendares Alacranes, Cienfuegos Elefantes, and Leopardos de Santa Clara. Throughout its history Cuba welcomed Negro League stars and in turn the Negro Leagues welcomed Cuban Stars. Today almost every MLB team has a Cuban player on its roster. Cuba continues the baseball tradition with its Serie Nacional de Béisbol. The league consists of sixteen teams throughout the island. Cuba was a fixture in the Serie del Caribe from 1949-1960. Cuba returned in 2014 and has made several appearances since then. Outside of the U.S. no country is more identified with baseball than Cuba. Our hat pays respect to the long history of Cubanos suiting up and spreading the game throughout Latin America.
