Baseball is more than a game. It has become a way to measure time and retell history. The game has a way of injecting itself into important and historic events. During the U.S. Civil War, northern and southern troops would take a break from fighting to play a game of baseball transforming bloody battle fields into rudimentary ball fields. For many of the troops this time in the service was their (first) introduction to the game. The returning soldiers who had fallen in love with the game carried their passion for baseball back with them to their towns all over the United States. This planted the seeds for the game to truly become America’s pastime.

In 1947 Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey gathered the courage to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Martin Luther King Jr. said himself that Jackie’s bravery on the baseball field set the fight for Civil Rights into action. Baseball was the perfect game to help the nation heal after the events of September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks. We watched first responders, firefighters, and police officers gather on Yankee field in the Bronx to be cheered and honored by our baseball luminaries. Through this blog we hope to highlight the game, its history, and our Latin contribution to baseball.
